Pop-up Books!

7th March 2012 by Jane Chapman

Iʼve just started writing my own stories, and the first one, Very Special Friends has just been published! There are also some lovely new pop-ups for Caterpillar Books – Silly Sea and Busy Garden (what a CUTE caterpillar).

Pop-up books are always really fun to make. First of all, I draw lots of animals, and then I send them to a paper engineer called Martin who makes them POP! He sticks cardboard and paper together to make the animals, then I cut bits off and stick bits on, then he cuts more bits off and sticks bits on, and we carry on like that until weʼre both happy. Only then do I get to do the painting, which is a leg here and a nose there…..I donʼt really know what it will look like until the printers have glued it all together again! It feels really magical.

a bit about us

We studied illustration together at Brighton University, graduating in 1993. Since then we've got married, had a couple of kids, and collectively illustrated over 150 books.

Although we work separately on our own commissions, we constantly refer to each other for advice when we get stuck. For instance, Jane is definitely better at perspective and providing cake, whereas Tim knows how to work the scanner and type an invoice.

We share a studio in rural Dorset, UK near the Jurassic Coast, with cows, rabbits, and badgers for neighbours.

Together we are CHAPMAN AND WARNES (a bit like Batman and Robin, but with less crime fighting and no capes)!

We would love to hear from you:
