Big and Small

31st May 2014 by Jane Chapman

Another book about a bear! I find it hard to make them look different from each other, so this one is BLUE! My favourite spread is the one with toadstools  – I wasn’t sure I was going to get away with it because of all the brown, but there’s something about the way that red and blue sing off brown that I love! When I was nineteen I went to Paris to the Picasso Museum where I was really struck by his brown paper collages with bits of painted blue. I really loved the colour combination and it stayed with me.

This summer I shall be working on a novelty book that I’ve devised featuring penguins. We’re still at the early stages but it should be fun – so watch this space!

a bit about us

We studied illustration together at Brighton University, graduating in 1993. Since then we've got married, had a couple of kids, and collectively illustrated over 150 books.

Although we work separately on our own commissions, we constantly refer to each other for advice when we get stuck. For instance, Jane is definitely better at perspective and providing cake, whereas Tim knows how to work the scanner and type an invoice.

We share a studio in rural Dorset, UK near the Jurassic Coast, with cows, rabbits, and badgers for neighbours.

Together we are CHAPMAN AND WARNES (a bit like Batman and Robin, but with less crime fighting and no capes)!

We would love to hear from you:
