Bear Counts

By Karma Wilson

Illustrated by Jane Chapman

Simon & Schuster 2015

Numbers, numbers everywhere! Can you count along with Bear?

The tenth Karma Wilson ‘Bear’ book, this time introducing counting to his younger fans! A companion book to  Bear Sees Colors and Big Bear, Small Mouse.

The great thing about the Bear books for me is the chance to paint animals like Raven and Gopher – most of the time I just get to do bears, rabbits and mice! In Bear Counts, I was able to illustrate one American robin, three muskrats and five pinching crawdads (another name for crayfish).

My favourite spread is an underwater scene of Bear and his friends swimming through the lilies, with otters, ducklings and tadpoles. It gave me a bit more freedom with the colour palette – and the opportunity to use a bigger brush. You can see me in the process of painting it over on our Facebook page.
